Aligning employees is key element in organization success
Aligning employees to unit goals is not just a statistical matrix but an integral part of the organizational success. It is when each individual goals commensurate to achieve larger goals of the organization. It demands common understanding & consistency. There could be different perceptions to look at the concept of alignment. To some, it may mean concealed agreement (of leaders/management among themselves) for larger benefit, to others it may mean follow the command. Former is the modern ideology of employee engagement, this depicts the presence of integrity, ownership and trust essence in the system. This could further lead to rich culture and environment establishment in the organization. It becomes imperative to manage human capital effectively and ultimately to attain strategic success.
Nevertheless, it is easier said than done. It takes ages to inculcate these elements in any organization, specifically Indian firms wherein the old school of thought is prevalent and a boss is a boss not leader.
It ought to follow a path – a step by step exercise.
Direct & clear Communication – Communicate the goals and messages clearly and make sure each employee understands.
Link individual goals to unit goals - This will enable managers and employees to more clearly visualize how their team and individual work contribute to the larger company strategies and success. Individual objectives should translate into larger objectives.
Commitment towards those goals – If the objectives are often discussed among employees, easier for them to show commitment towards those.
Recognize, reward people & strengthen them – Understanding the individual strength and aligning the same with company’s goal, will help everyone to success, a win-win situation. This will be defining factor in maintaining the high engagement & motivation level of employees.
Maintain transparency - Transparency is inevitable to instill performing environment in the organization where everyone is aligned to organizational goals. An efficient & healthier work environment which leads to the success of organization.
Employee alignment is even much more than what is being stated (done) above. It is just the beginning in a virtuous circle of alignment and we have a long way to go. An organization first has to demonstrate it to their leaders as employees are more of a reflection of leadership. Remember, to create famous leaders within who lead by examples. For instance, if business objective is to achieve enhanced training hours of employees. Firstly, leader should participate more in such activities to motivate team/s to do so in order to achieve collective results. Achievement should be considered when strategic goals are collectively met rather individuals.
Including the quality of assignment, team/org environment towards people, and existence of employee development programs will be brownie points in this voyage. So, the commitment of leaders in command and human resources department (as change agents) is must to create a match made in heaven among individuals and unit.
